返 (fǎn): Return (to).
Like many cities all over the world, Venice imposed a strict self-isolation policy to half COVID-19's spread. As a result, its waterways became devoid of cruise ships, boats and gondolas. The water in Venice's canals cleared up, and plants and wildlife were seen returning to the city. It's anyone's guess how long this transformation will last, but for the moment it seems Venice is taking a breather from tourism's punishing regime (20 million arrivals a year!).
