疫 (yì): Epidemic.
Little did I know this piece would mark the start of a micro-series of Covid-19-related haikus… As a side note, beak masks were worn by plague doctors in the 17th century. These masks had glass eye openings and curved beaks typically stuffed with sweet or strong smelling substances. This setup was believed to protect the wearer from airborne diseases, or miasma ("bad air").
