They say Singaporeans lack imagination and creativity. What if there is a platform for budding writers to pen poems and share them with other readers online? For a month? Singapore Poetry Writing Month ("SingPoWriMo") accomplishes just that. SingPoWriMo is a poetry-writing challenge that takes place annually in April. Organised by SIngLit Station, this event has been going on for almost 7 years now. For every day in April, there will be a writing prompt provided by the SingPoWriMo moderators. Participants create a poem based on the prompt(s) of the day and share it on social media (namely, Facebook and Instagram). For FAQs and more information, visit SingPoWriMo's site here. This year, in collaboration with SingPoWriMo, Ethos Books is giving away a copy of my 2nd poetry collection Bitter Punch (read a sample here), as well as a $10 Ethos Books gift card for a poem based on the prompt(s) for Day 18. Check out the prompt after the break: That's not all. Here is a piece I wrote in response to the 2 prompts above, titled "What a Life"
. What a Life After Carver’s “For Tess” for Vivyan A house with a garden and a pool. An expensive car in the driveway. An office overlooking the bay. My name in gold letters on the door. What a life! Go to lunch with powerful people who know I worked hard for a seat at the table. When the bill arrives, they clamour to pay, but I will say it’s on me-- I wanted to tell you about my dream but you were asleep. It was dark, so I closed my eyes and went back to sleep, but not before imagining for a moment what it might feel like to be dead. Gone, without ever knowing if this is all my life amounted to. But it was the thought of leaving you behind that scared me so much I pulled you close, and you were there. That’s what’s more important. ~ That's it for now. Back to work. Stay safe.
